Benjamin Franklin Romaine

Image
A bronze angel, holding a hammer and chisel, perches on the monument of Benjamin Franklin Romaine, a NYC merchant, appearing to rest after completing the memorial. Romaine was a Trustee of both the Bowery savings Bank and the Church of the Divine Paternity, where his funeral service was held. Romaine's father, Jacob, who is also buried in the plot, headed the Romaine Academy for Young Ladies, a private school in New York City.

One of the Green-Wood Cemetery' Dogs

Image
While I'm familiar with several monuments featuring canine statuary, on the Green-Wood grounds, this was a new one on me. I've been trying to find more information about the Blakley family, and the significance  behind the statue. I will report back when I do.

The Weeping Angel

Image
The Weeping Angel is one of my all-time favorite monuments. So much so, that I requested that the publisher of my last book-- Gardens of Stone--make it the cover.  This monument is Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, but variations can be found in a number of cemeteries around the world.

A Sorrow So Deep

This exquisite statue in St. John Cemetery is o ne of my perennial favorites. I've photographed this monument in every season, year after year.

Rose

One of my favorite monuments in Calvary Cemetery is that of 25-year-old Rose, who died in 1927.
